How to Create a Playlist on Spotify

HOW TO CREATE A PLAYLIST ON SPOTIFY

BROWSER · DESKTOP · MOBILE · 2026

Sign in, open Your Library, press the plus button and choose
create a playlist.
Name it, then add tracks from the three-dot
menu next to any song. It works the same in a browser at
open.spotify.com, in the desktop app and on mobile, and
a free account is enough — Premium is not required.
One playlist holds around 10,000 tracks.

Step by step

  1. Sign in to Spotify

Open the app, or go to open.spotify.com in any browser. A free account is enough — playlist creation is not a Premium feature.

No installation needed if you stay in the browser. How the Spotify web player works.

  2. Open Your Library

On desktop and in the browser it sits in the left sidebar. On mobile it is at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Create the playlist

Press the plus button and choose to create a playlist. An empty one appears in your library immediately.

  4. Name it

Click the title to rename it. The same panel lets you write a description and replace the cover with your own image — worth doing if you want the playlist to be found or shared.

  5. Add tracks

Search for a song, open the three-dot menu next to it and choose Add to playlist.

On desktop you can also drag tracks directly onto the playlist name in the sidebar, which is far quicker when you are building a long set.

  6. Decide who sees it

From the playlist three-dot menu: make it public or private, or switch on collaboration so anyone with the link can add tracks.

One thing to know before you build a big one. A single
playlist holds around 10,000 tracks — Spotify calls the ceiling
approximate rather than exact, and playlists can misbehave as they
approach it. The limit is identical on free and Premium accounts, and
collaborative playlists share one allowance across every contributor.
Liked Songs is not a playlist and is not capped the same way.

Questions

Do you need Premium to create a playlist?

No. Creating, naming, editing and sharing playlists all work on a
free Spotify account. Premium changes playback — ads, on-demand
selection, audio quality — not playlist creation.

How many songs can a playlist hold?

Around 10,000 tracks. Spotify describes the ceiling as approximate
rather than exact, and playlists can behave oddly as they get close
to it. The same limit applies to free accounts, Premium accounts and
collaborative playlists.

Can you create a playlist in a browser?

Yes. The web player at open.spotify.com creates and edits playlists
exactly like the desktop app, with nothing to install. Sign in, open
Your Library, and use the plus button.

How do you make a playlist collaborative?

Open the playlist, use the three-dot menu, turn on collaboration and
share the link. Anyone with the link can add and remove tracks. The
playlist still counts against the same track limit, shared across
every contributor.

Can you keep a playlist private?

Yes. Set it to private from the three-dot menu and it stays off your
public profile. Private and public playlists follow exactly the same
rules otherwise.
