SPOTIFY PREMIUM LIMITATIONS

WHAT THE SUBSCRIPTION DOESN’T BUY · 2026

Spotify Premium buys access, not ownership. It removes ads and unlocks on-demand playback, but its downloads are encrypted licences rather than files: 10,000 tracks per device, 5 devices maximum, revoked if you stay offline for 30 days, and dead the day you cancel. Lossless audio does not reach the browser player and does not cover podcasts, and DJ use is restricted to personal, non-commercial listening.

What Premium genuinely unlocks: ad-free playback, on-demand track selection, offline downloads inside the app, Lossless audio on supported apps and devices, and catalogue access from desktop DJ software. Those are real. The limits below sit next to them, not instead of them.

Six things it still won’t do

  1. 🔇 Lossless stops at the browser

Lossless runs in the desktop and mobile apps. It does not run in the browser player. This is not new: the Very High 320 kbps setting was already app-only before Lossless existed, and the browser streams AAC instead of Ogg Vorbis.

Listen at open.spotify.com and the audio upgrade you pay for never reaches you. More on the Spotify web player.

  2. 🎙️ Lossless does not cover podcasts

Lossless applies to music only. Music videos, podcasts and audiobooks are excluded from it.

Any long-form DJ mix delivered through a podcast feed — including ours — arrives compressed whichever plan you pay for. No subscription changes that.

  3. 🔌 Your gear has to be certified, not just capable

FLAC support in your hardware is not enough. A device must be updated for Spotify’s lossless delivery specification before the option can be selected at all.

Until the manufacturer ships that update the setting stays greyed out and playback stops at Very High — on speakers and receivers that handle lossless perfectly well from other services.

  4. 📥 Downloads are not files

10,000 tracks per device, 5 devices at most, and you must go online at least once every 30 days or the licence is revoked.

What lands on your phone is encrypted and plays only inside Spotify. You cannot move it, copy it, open it elsewhere or keep it. Cancel and it is gone the same day.

  5. 🎛️ DJing is allowed, but only at home

Premium connects to rekordbox, Serato and djay on desktop, in supported markets. Use is personal and non-commercial. Spotify’s terms rule out public performance: no clubs, no venues, no events, no livestreams.

Serato states that recording is not supported with Spotify tracks, and stems are unavailable. There is no offline cache either — the connection drops, the deck empties.

  6. 📡 A streamed crate can be switched off

In May 2026 the DJ integration went dark for close to nine days across all three applications. Playlists still appeared but loaded empty. A fix landed around 20–21 May with no public explanation.

Catalogue availability inside DJ software also shifts by market and over time as licensing changes. A track you played last month is not guaranteed to be there tonight.

Questions

Is Spotify Premium worth it?

It depends what you want from it. Premium reliably delivers ad-free, on-demand listening with better audio inside the apps. It does not deliver ownership: downloads are encrypted, capped at 10,000 tracks across 5 devices, expire if you stay offline for 30 days, and stop working when you cancel. Worth it as access, not as a library.

Does Premium have Lossless on the web player?

No. Spotify Lossless works in the desktop and mobile apps, not in the browser player at open.spotify.com. The web player streams AAC, and the older Very High 320 kbps setting was already restricted to the apps before Lossless launched.

Why did my downloads disappear?

Most often because the device stayed offline too long. Spotify requires a connection at least once every 30 days; past that the offline licence is revoked and downloaded content stops playing. The other common cause is the device limit: downloads are allowed on 5 devices at most, and a sixth pushes an older one out.

Can I record a DJ set made with Spotify?

No. Serato states that recording is not supported when playing Spotify streaming tracks, and stems are unavailable. Spotify also restricts the service to personal, non-commercial use, which rules out playing those mixes in a club, at an event, or on a livestream.

What happens to downloads if I cancel Premium?

They stop working. Downloaded tracks are encrypted and play only inside the Spotify app while the subscription is active. They are not stored as ordinary audio files, so nothing remains to play once the plan ends.
